George Orwells 1984 vs. Ridley Scottââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËBlade Runnerââ¬â¢
Many futuristic texts depict grim and bleak worlds; however the author often tantalizes the readers with a taste of hope, only to systematically destroy it . Hope is defined as that that is wanted or desired is attainable, without hope there is no reason to live. Throughout the novel ââ¬Ë1984ââ¬â¢ by George Orwell there is an undercurrent of hope, of the possibility that things can improve in the future. However, by the end the text is completely bereft of hope. In Ridley Scottââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËBlade Runnerââ¬â¢ we see a dystopia devoid of hope, where the only possibility of bettering your life is to move ââ¬Å"off-worldâ⬠and leave behind the now effete Earth behind. At first glance it would seem that Orwellââ¬â¢s ââ¬Ë1984ââ¬â¢ is completely without of hope. In ââ¬Ë1984ââ¬â¢ this hope is shown through his dream of the ââ¬Å"Golden Countryâ⬠, and through the characters of Emmanuel Goldstein and the anonymous Prole woman. Unfortunately all these sources of hope are systematically and ruthlessly destroyed by Orwell. In Ridley Scottââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËBlade Runnerââ¬â¢ the only source of hope is a quick fix solution that will inevitably fail, and cause the need of yet another quick fix solution. Even though many futuristic texts contain undercurrents of hope, these sources of hope are either eventually annihilated by the author, or once researched deeper are not really a source or hope at
